More than 100 pieces of problematic furniture were destroyed in the UK, most of which were flammable and unlabeled products. According to the BBC report on January 16, the North Tyneside District Council in the UK recently conducted a trading standards investigation in the South Shields area and destroyed more than 100 pieces of furniture and electrical appliances with safety hazards. The investigation originated from local residents reporting that some merchants were selling unlabeled furniture.
Tests showed that a large number of products had serious safety hazards, including furniture that was highly flammable and lacked compliant safety labels, and decorative electric fireplaces whose plugs did not meet safety standards. Karen Clark, MP, head of public health, stressed that such products could have "catastrophic consequences" once they were used in households.
The merchants involved have "voluntarily surrendered" all the problematic inventory. The destroyed products include 27 sofas, 24 armchairs, 48 dining chairs, 3 bed frames, 3 mattresses and 14 decorative electric fireplaces. A spokesman for North Tyneside District Council called on residents to be cautious when purchasing furniture and electrical appliances, and to carefully check the safety labels, CE or UKCA certification marks and instructions for use to ensure that the products meet safety standards.
Experts pointed out that this case exposed the problems in market supervision and reminded consumers to be vigilant when purchasing furniture to avoid potential safety risks. It also reflects the importance of strengthening market supervision of substandard and improperly labeled products.
